Matthaeus Tomasevici

I had an uncle named Demetrei.
Raised catholic, lived as atheist then became orthodox.
And he actually was named after a Greek goddess.

@mundi Wonder why he became a believer again. I don’t see myself ever believing - and I take my mom to church every Sunday. Always wondering if there are any other atheists in the pews.

@mundi Oh wow, that’s a life-changing event for sure.

I love churches , especially catholic one. There is some tranquility inside. Everything is paused. And they are the most welcoming for outsiders.
Buddhist and Daoist temples are very welcoming as well but very busy. In synagogues and mosques (and to some extent orthodox churches) I always feel like trespassing someone’s territory.

@mundi My fav church/cathedral is St John the Divine in NYC. I loved visiting it when I lived there. The modern Catholic church my mom goes to seems to be lacking any kind of atmosphere. But, what really gets me, is how they rant and rave against abortion and ask everyone to join them outside abortion clinics.

My favourite is The Holly Sepulchre in Jerusalem. So many colours, so many sounds and languages and different rituals. It very loud and busy, yet you can find your silent corner. The construction is very unique. It is not a normal church, but a tunnel built into the mountain with many different chapels for different sects.
But avoid visiting during Easter. Then the noise overcomes the silent and the smell of sweat overcomes the incense.

@mundi That’s an amazing description. I missed going to Jerusalem on my one and only work-related trip to Israel.
