ResearchBuzz: Firehose
Gizmodo: Books Written Without AI Can Now Receive New ‘Human Authored’ Certification. “The Authors Guild, one of the largest associations of writers in America, is launching a new project to certify books that have been written by a human rather than a machine. The new ‘Human Authored’ certification will help authors distinguish their work and let readers know what they are reading—and […]

https://rbfirehose.com/2025/02/13/gizmodo-books-written-without-ai-can-now-receive-new-human-authored-certification/

The Department of Education’s recent characterization of book bans as a “hoax” goes against the findings of multiple federal courts, which have found that certain of these laws violate the First Amendment rights of authors and students.

The issue here is not the removal of age-inappropriate, sexually explicit or obscene materials from schools; no one objects to that. The problem is the tendency to tar otherwise appropriate works with an accusation of “obscenity” because someone takes issue with the ideas contained in the book—more often than not works that are written by or stories that feature LGBTQ+ or BIPOC individuals. Some books have been removed because of challenges made by one or very few people, who often have not read the book."

Fight for the Future
While the tens of billions publishing is making has been at historic highs over the past several years, median author incomes, which frankly were always pathetic, have gone down over 50% since 2007.

This massive dip on the chart of author incomes (thank you #AuthorsGuild for the data!) looks an awful lot like the plunge that record labels took when, their words not ours, someone was “stealing” from them.

Everyone who knows me knows I hate piracy, but I don’t see what the Open Library does as piracy or really that different from what libraries have always done. What do these authors think about the predicament of kids living in areas where book bans prevent them from accessing essential information, or people like me who don’t live anywhere near a library that has a significant English-language collection? I assume these people would only accept digital lending if it came with significant barriers to access.
