Now that the Alberta government has introduced its controversial amendments to the Alberta Bill of Rights, I want to reshare my recent conversation with the Hon. Ron Ghitter, one of the architects of Alberta’s ORIGINAL Bill of Rights. His view of this new amendments? “Ludicrous.” podbean.com/wlei/pb-t2b6w-1711 #Alberta #ableg #abpoli #BillofRights #SenateofCanada #antisemitism #cdnpoli

LIddis (sic) does not understand what the Bill of Rights does. It protects you from *government* action. That's it. Her employer is not the government, then the First Amendment does not apply.

You know what's also part of the First Amendment besides Free Speech? The Right of Association, which all courts in the US have interpreted as also being a right of disassociation. If her employer wants to disassociate with her, they can.

I guess they don't want to be associated with an asshole.

The #DeclarationOfIndependence is not a legal document. The people who came up with it also thought the weak #ArticlesOfConfederation were great. When everything started falling apart, they pushed a #Constitution that concentrated more power in a central government. But they had to add the #BillOfRights to get buy-in from the die-hard patriotic libertarian fantasists.

Instead of learning from this that government is just a series of very human compromises, many worship the founders. Fuck me.

@KathyLK. #Milbank is correct. #Trump & his minions are counting on the country having a case of mass #dementia - not only short-term #memory loss (his incoherence on #abortion), but further into the past -- say, bleach injections to cure #COVID. & as with #dementia, recent memory goes 1st followed by deeper memory. The #Holocaust; how #Hitler rose to power; the #CivilWar; the words of the #Constitution/the #BillOfRights.
Let's remember #Faulkner: 'The past is never dead. It's not even past.'

"The Supreme Court in 1896 evidently didn’t accept Charles Sumner’s view that the 14th Amendment would create a “new mandate to constitutional interpretation, whereby the Constitution would be interpreted uniformly and thoroughly for human rights.”

The work of ensuring that all people were endowed with unalienable rights was thus left to future generations."

Still a long way to go before the US lives up to its #BillOfRights
