Recently back from my 29th #Everglades #Kayak Trip!

We were met by an eleven foot long American Crocodile on the boat ramp. (Why is he grinning?) They are endangered and have a preserve on islands to the east. They must be recovering and spreading out—there are two big ones (11 and 15 feet long) now resident near the Ranger Station. Unlike #alligators they prefer salt water.

I'm happy that our paper on the teleosauroid crocodylomorph Macrospondylus bollensis from the Lower Jurassic Posidonia Shale of Holzmaden (Germany) has been published today. This is the first of a series of papers on tetrapods from Holzmaden in which I have been involved. A very important plesiosaur-related study will in fact be published tomorrow, so stay tuned 🙂!
Here is the link to the ppaper that is open access:

SpringerLinkA re-description of the teleosauroid Macrospondylus bollensis (Jaeger, 1828) from the Posidonienschiefer Formation of Germany - PalZTeleosauroid crocodylomorphs were a successful, diverse and abundant clade that expanded near-globally during the Jurassic Period. Teleosauroids are commonly found in Toarcian strata (Early Jurassic) within Europe, with multiple unique specimens pertaining to four taxa having been discovered in the Posidonienschiefer Formation (= Posidonia Shale) in southwestern Germany. The majority of these specimens have been referred to Macrospondylus bollensis (Jaeger, 1828), a basal machimosaurid species previously assigned to the genus Steneosaurus. Macrospondylus bollensis, as a species, is known to have a long and impressive history; unfortunately, the holotype of Ma. bollensis is poorly understood, rarely referenced in the current literature and is often incorrectly thought to be a teleosauroid specimen from Whitby. The actual holotype (housed at the Museum für Mineralogie und Geologie in Dresden), while badly burned, offers valuable information on basal teleosauroid postcranial material. We provide a detailed re-description of Macrospondylus bollensis, recognize it as a valid taxon and compare it with other Toarcian and machimosaurid teleosauroids. In addition, we evaluate the ecology and biogeographical distribution of Macrospondylus.

Underwater portrait of a crocodile ;-)
This may seem strange but I love crocodiles. They are fascinating animals, unloved and not valued at their true value. They are engineer animals that allow the existence of hundreds of other species in the mangroves, in Mexico. For the Mayans, the crocodile is the one who sacrificed himself to save the world by carrying it on his back! I made this image for my previous film broadcast in December on television. It's called "Face to Face: overcoming fear with the crocodiles".
