Noir is bleak, fatalist, about protagonists who try to get out from under only to sink deeper into their predicaments. Hardboiled is more open to stories of protagonists who make their way through harsh environments and manage to remain unscathed. As <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/RaymondChandler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RaymondChandler</a> put it, "Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean."
