MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 13, 1848: The German revolutions of 1848-1849 began in Vienna. While the middle classes were fighting for a unified German state and increased civil liberties, the working class had more revolutionary aspirations. Participants in the revolution included communist and anarchist revolutionaries like Marx, Engels and Bakunin, as well as the composer Wagner. The aristocracy exploited the split between the classes, facilitating their eventual violent defeat, with great loss of life and mass imprisonment. Many fled to the U.S. and became known as “forty-eighters.” They moved to places like Cincinnati’s Ober der Rhine neighborhood, or Saint Louis. After risking their lives fighting against serfdom in Europe, many were so horrified by the persistence of slavery in their new country that they dedicated themselves to the cause of abolition and free thinking, joining organizations like the Freimӓnverein (Society of Freemen) and the Wide Awakes (a radical militia that defended free blacks and fought Confederates in the streets). Some of them also became publishers, like Henry Boernstein, who had previously published “Vorwärts!” in Paris with Karl Marx, Engels, Heinrich Heine and others.</p><p>You can read more on The Wide Awakes and the Antebellum Roots of Wokeness here: <a href="https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/27/the-wide-awakes-and-the-antebellum-roots-of-wokeness/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/</span><span class="invisible">27/the-wide-awakes-and-the-antebellum-roots-of-wokeness/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>germany</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CivilWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CivilWar</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/marx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marx</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/bakunin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bakunin</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/saintlouis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>saintlouis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cincinnati" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cincinnati</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/vienna" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vienna</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/civilliberties" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>civilliberties</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 9, 1841: The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that freed the remaining 35 survivors of the Amistad mutiny. In 1839, Portuguese slave traders had illegally transported 52 Mende people from west Africa to Cuba, on the Amistad, in violation of European treaties against the slave trade. Joseph Cinque led his fellow captive Africans in a mutiny, killing the cook and captain, and forcing the remaining crew to return them to Africa. The crew tricked them and sailed up the Atlantic coast, presuming they would be intercepted by the U.S. Navy, which captured the ship near Montauk, Long Island. President Martin Van Buren wanted to send the prisoners back to Spanish authorities in Cuba to stand trial for mutiny. However, the Court recognized the mutineers’ rights as free citizens. Abolitionists raised funds for the mutineers’ defense. Former President John Quincy Adams, who opposed slavery, represented them in court.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/amistad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amistad</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cinque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cinque</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SCOTUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SCOTUS</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/johnquincyadams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>johnquincyadams</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlackMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastodon</span></a></p>

Lisa Kalayji<p>"On Tuesday, Feb 25 in Giles County General District Court, 11 out of 12 defendants accepted non-cooperating plea deals for charges related to actions against the Mountain Valley Pipeline... The 11 defendants who accepted deals were all facing absurd felony charges, including felony abduction and felony “unauthorized use of a vehicle.”</p><p>One of the defendants who pushed for a better plea agreement said, “Today we proved that co-defendant solidarity works. We were able to see how different strategies against a stacked system play out. It is in the courts best interest for us to take a deal out of fear of trial, but today we showed that they are just as afraid of an uncertain outcome and we can use that to our advantage when we work together. The people who went to trial, or pushed it to the brink, got objectively better outcomes than those who took deals ahead of time.”</p><p>The Mountain Valley Pipeline is a 303 mile long fracked gas pipeline tearing through West Virginia and Virginia, crossing delicate mountain ecosystems, karst terrain, and over 1000 streams and waterways. Scott Campbell<p>"In effect, the goal of prison is to break us, to make us believe that we deserve it, to make us believe that our lives don’t belong to us...Being on the inside is a chance to demonstrate to them that we cannot be defeated. It is a chance to resist and to mock their chains, their stupid rules, and their double standards."</p><p><a href="https://itsgoingdown.org/interview-with-tempestad-anarchist-and-ex-prisoner-in-mexico-city/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">itsgoingdown.org/interview-wit</span><span class="invisible">h-tempestad-anarchist-and-ex-prisoner-in-mexico-city/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CDMX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CDMX</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today, for Black History Month, we remember Hiram Rhodes Revels who, on this date, February 25, 1870, was sworn into the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African American ever to sit in Congress. He was a Republican from Mississippi. His cousins were killed participating in John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry. During the Civil War, he helped recruit and organize two black Union regiments. When he first arrived at the Senate, southern Democrats refused to let him sit, arguing that the Dred Scott decision, in 1857, ruled that he wasn’t a citizen and had no right to serve, despite the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, which gave him birthright citizenship</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/congress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>congress</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/reconstruction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reconstruction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/johnbrown" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>johnbrown</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/harpersferry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>harpersferry</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/republican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>republican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CivilWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CivilWar</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/HiramRhodesRevels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HiramRhodesRevels</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/uprising" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uprising</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/revolt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolt</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/birthrightcitizenship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birthrightcitizenship</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/blackhistorymonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blackhistorymonth</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlackMastadon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastadon</span></a></p>
