Adam Dalliance<p>Watched the last season of StarTrek Discovery, in which the crew race against a couple of renegades to solve clues that lead them to technology left by the ancients that spread life around the galaxy.</p><p>Ridiculous.</p><p>I quite liked the renegade characters, star crossed lovers fighting two empires to survive. And the crew of Discovery include some decent character with nice arcs.</p><p>The idea that Next Gen era scientists left clues that future people would follow 800 years later is like something out of a game rather than a drama though. Makes no sense. Those guys should have done what burnham does and burn it instead of hiding it for more peaceful times.</p><p>And those last 20 minutes of happily ever after wrap up was terrible. Sentimental schmaltzy bullshit. Certainly should have cut that, showing aged characters in retirement and the last mission to just abandon the ship. Nope. Would have all been better without any of that.</p><p>Farewell then Discovery. You started before Kirk and ended a thousand years latter. Maude Nificent<p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Watching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Watching</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/AmericanPrimeval" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmericanPrimeval</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HellOnWheels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HellOnWheels</span></a></p><p>almost lost memories of a 1950s/60s childhood playing “cowboys & itchybums” (what advanced senses of humour we had when we were young). the world was as black and white as a TV show — death was never painful but instantaneous and there were no bigger issues/ context than how wrong indians were to try and hold back the good white people developing america during the western era<br>(shows about world war two were much the same, and just as formulaic - there were us, and there were germans, with only the technology of death advanced)</p><p>fast forward to more adult narratives — the usa as a land of freedom and opportunity, where good people thrive and those who don’t, well, it’s their fault… the rosy history one would imagine reading FreeToChoose - Milton & Rose Friedman’s essay on the benefits of free market capitalism and a willingness to work hard at the pursuit of happiness</p><p>#1883 (on paramount) was a refreshingly complex take on the westward expansion of the US after the civil war</p><p>then came <a href="https://aus.social/tags/AmericanPrimeval" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AmericanPrimeval</span></a> on netflix - a four way clash between mormons, the US army, Indigenous people, and settlers. it’s loosely based in some historical truth, and nothing like milton friedman’s rosy take - just violence, greed, othering and in-human indifference. the show didn’t “teach me” all about the mormons, but as i never watch tv without an ipad handy and the internet at my fingertips, one can’t help but discover stuff.</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/HellOnWheels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HellOnWheels</span></a> is on 7+ in australia (i bought it through itunes cos i like to pretend i’m elon). this is also set in the USA after the civil war, and by golly I liked it. sure, the usual murder, rape, racism sexism racism rape sexism limited opportunities and murder etc but far less cow-plop than what we are supposed to believe about capitalism sprouting up where opportunities are unregulated by government. </p><p>the story line is loosely based on the race to complete a trans-continental railway. there are also mormons, US Army, Indigenous people, immigrants, and formerly enslaved, with several different worldviews represented.</p><p>two characters i came to like - the central character is cullen bohannen, with an interesting set of values, and Eva, who had buckets of gumption. i could smell the mud while I watched (yecch) but a lot of the soundtrack music is 👍🏻<br>——-<br>unrelated doggerel about looming disaster one watches because one is powerless to stop it but fascinated at the same time—</p><p>a cow stood on the railroad track <br>the driver rang the bell<br>but did that cow move off the track?<br>oh yeah… like flipping hell<br>there was a crash, a mighty smash<br>bits of cow did fill the air <br>one teat fell into an old maid’s lap<br>and did her bosom thrill<br>she cried aloud to all the crowd<br>my god, the driver’s killed!</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/bYX5AC9WP50" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/bYX5AC9WP50</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
