Decent backgrounder for general audience, tho this framing strikes me as a bit odd: sure, tree is gone, but phenomenon remains well known & was in fact depicted on the reverse of the first US Bicentennial medal nytimes.com/1972/05/28/archive

From the NY Times article: The first medal is rich in history. The design carries the legend “American Revolution Bicentennial” and it identifies Washington, the Father of our Country. It also carries the ARBC logo in the form of a rosette to the right of the General's bust, and it bears the letter P, the Philadelphia Mint mark. For his reverse design, Mr. Menconi chose symbols of incidents that hastened the Revolutionary War, The Liberty Tree, used by the Sons of Liberty as a meeting place dominates the pattern. To the left of the tree is a reproduction of the stamp used by the British in enforcing their much-despised Stamp Act.
