“Maya masks perform origin stories, connecting humans & supernatural beings. Monkey masks, used at festivals, recall a story of twin brothers turned into monkeys. Deer, jaguar, & boar masks are worn to perform an ancient deer hunt. In the Dance of the Cowboy, bull masks are used to satirize the Spanish bullfight.”
