A few months ago I went to a museum in Oregon that differentiated #Ainu and Japanese. Across from that display were two pieces that were Ryukyuan: A Bingata Ryusou and an art piece of a Ryukyuan dancer. However, instead of the labels giving space to Ryukyuan culture or identity, they were both labeled Japanese.
There are too many items in museums and special collections where non-Japanese items are viewed as "just Japanese" and perpetuated that way to the public.
Trying to figure out what the best course of action is to ask them about it without sounding too rude?
@tori I would just write to them completely factually, focusing on the information that should be there—not on what is wrong, that's already self-evident. My own experience is that the receivers of such information are receptive and take action.
@vecrumba Thank you for the response! I feel like they would also be, considering those pieces were on display. I really appreciate it!
