Absolutely amazing news! After bargaining on Friday was held over into Saturday, a settlement was reached for Education Workers in the 3 bargaining units Edmonton Public, Fort McMurray Public, and Fort McMurray Catholic schools! Education workers in Fort McMurray have been on strike for 5 months, and in Edmonton for over 2 months, holding the picket lines in some of the worst freezing cold that Alberta has to offer!

CUPE president Rory Gil reflects my feelings for our education workers the best:

“I’m in awe of the workers in Edmonton and Fort McMurray who stood their ground, in weather as cold as minus 51 degrees, to win a fair contract,” said Gill. “Their fortitude, their determination, and their solidarity won the day.”

“Education support workers are critical to our school system, and today they finally won the respect they deserve,” said Gill.

Education workers in Edmonton are expected to return to work on Wednesday or Thursday, after the settlement is ratified by CUPE members on Monday or Tuesday. No details will be shared until the members have had a chance to see them, but I'm sure if the bargaining team is satiated then the members will be too!

This fight should never have been needed, as having enough respect for our most important educational workers, who support all of our children, to give them a living wage should never be in question.

Yet here we are, in a fight against Capitalist interests who see human beings as a worthless commodity, and the government who seeks to cut and slash public services to privatize them and hand them over to these same profiteering interests.

These job actions have not ended. Education workers in Calgary and Parkland county have more recently joined the strike lines and have not yet reached a settlement. Strikes and labour actions are striking up all across the country, as we have reached the point of end-stage capitalism and they have taken far too much from us for far too long. This profiteering and hoarding of wealth by the few is not sustainable for the many who are struggling and unable to live. This exploitation must come to an end, and it will not end without COLLECTIVE ACTION!

In solidarity.

CUPE Alberta · Deals reached in three education strikes - CUPE AlbertaEDMONTON, ALBERTA – Deals that could lead to the end of a province wide strike by education workers were reached today between CUPE locals and the Edmonton Public, Fort McMurray Public and Fort McMurray Catholic school districts. The settlements, which must still be ratified by CUPE members, would end the strikes at three school districts. ... Read more...

Today in Labor History March 16, 2003: Israeli Defense Forces murdered American activist Rachel Corrie in Rafah by running over her with a bulldozer during the 2nd Intifada. She had been defending a Palestinian home that the IDF was trying to demolish as part of their collective punishment of the Palestinian people. Corie was a member of the International Solidarity Movement. She had travelled to Rafah as part of her college's (Evergreen State, in Olympia, WA) senior-year independent-study project to connect Olympia and Rafah with each other as sister cities. Under Trump, her college would likely be stripped of federal funding for allowing such a project, and Corie, herself, might have been deemed a terrorist.

According to a January 2025 report, by the United Nations Office of Coordinated Human Affairs, 92% of all housing units in Gaza are now either destroyed, or severely damaged. 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents are internally displaced. And 345,000 face catastrophic food insecurity.

Early this morning, #anarchists attacked SIRCO by smashing windows and spraying paint inside and outside the building. If that name rings a bell, SIRCO was the company responsible for dismantling the McGill #Gaza #solidarity encampment in July 2024. Since October, they have been employed by the Ville de #Montréal to spy on and intimidate unhoused and marginalized folks in the Ville-Marie borough. As Valérie Plante’s administration declares open warfare on the most vulnerable people in society, there is no doubt that this strategy of outsourcing the SPVM’s dirty work to private companies will be generalized to the entire island like EMMIS if nothing is done to stop it.

„Die Verwechslung von Besatzung mit Frieden ist etwas, was auch mir immer wieder in Gesprächen mit westlichen Linken begegnet. Setzt Russland seine Interessen durch, bedeutet das für die Menschen in der Ukraine Unterdrückung, Angst, Gewalt, Verschleppung, Mord – all das, was sich in den von Russland besetzten ukrainischen Gebieten beobachten ließ und lässt.“

I should probably post something meaningful and profound for #LongCovidAwarenessDay but I'm too tired after spending every spoon on my son's birthday.

Instead, inspired by someone else inviting people to #SitTogether, I'm just going to suggest we adopt Sit Down by James as our anthem.

"It's hard to carry on
When you feel all alone
Now I've swung back down again
It's worse than it was before"

Sit down next to me.
Sit down in sympathy.

Some #Democrats argue that it’s complicated; that the consequences of party solidarity regarding the recent vote on a ‘continuing resolution’ to keep the government open for business would not be, on balance, worthy of their opposition. Ten Democratic senators to be precise. I VIGOROUSLY DISAGREE! If we’re going to be a true OPPOSITION party, then we need to resist — at every turn, for as long as it takes. Resistance is built on solidarity. If our voters can’t trust us, count on us, to actively resist in a strategic and organized fashion, then we’re gonna lose them AGAIN. Just like we did in the last general election. As grass-roots activists, it’s up to us to insist on better leadership and demand solidarity. There must be a price to pay for centrist obstruction and betrayal. Let’s start with the rogue’s gallery below. #politics #USPol #USPolitics #betrayal #solidarity #DemocraticParty
