Book excerpt reads: Walking out into the crowds of hurrying people, I couldn’t remember where I’d parked. For a sudden, shocking moment, I couldn’t even remember which door I’d come through. Realising I was standing right where everyone else wanted to walk, I told myself to get a fucking grip. I moved over to the wall and concentrated on remembering the shops I’d first passed. I checked the store directory. Now I knew where I was, and where I had to go. The Manchester traffic was predictably awful. Things improved the closer I got to Blithehurst. Once I left the main roads, I could put my foot down, not that the ageing Fabia had much poke. I reached the estate’s back entrance at a quarter past seven. Fin was already sitting in her car by the locked gate. She couldn’t have been there long. If any of the staff had seen her as they were leaving, they’d let her drive in. But everyone had gone home by now. Fin got out of her car. As I pulled up, she came over. I lowered the window and gave her my keys. She unlocked the gate, we both drove through, and Fin snapped the padlock shut on the chain again. She followed me to park in the dairy yard. I got out of the Fabia. Fin came over to give me a hug. ‘What now?’ Her voice was muffled against my chest.

Book extract reads: The cunning men had survived by heading for the hills, every one for himself and travelling light. The wise women had gone to ground. Keeping their heads down, they’d watched each other’s backs and found ways to be the first to hear any rumour of witchcraft. When one of them had to run, the others helped her hide. Paranoia about magic had faded. Getting in touch with each other got easier, from the invention of telegrams onwards. The wise women’s early-warning system became a network to share news of clashes between the everyday world and the things that go bump in the night. They got very good at shutting down trouble and convincing ordinary people that nothing in folklore or fairy tales could be real. Peter took the plate. ‘Could you give me a day or so to see if Iain will agree, please?’ He didn’t sound optimistic, and neither was I.
