‘Megalopolis’ — The Fever Dreams of Francis Ford Coppola

Francis Ford #Coppola’s “#Megalopolis” is a bursting-at-the-seams hallucination of a movie — it’s wonderfully out-there. At once a melancholic lament and futuristic fantasy, it invokes different epochs and overflows with entrancing, at times confounding images and ideas that have been playing in my head since I first saw the movie in May at the Cannes Film Festival

There, it was both warmly received and glibly dismissed, a critical divide that’s nothing new for Coppola, a restlessly experimental filmmaker with a long habit of going off-Hollywood.

Did you know that Francis Ford Coppola is Nicolas Cage's uncle?

From The Godfather to Sofia Coppola's Virgin Suicide or Gia's Palo Alto, the Coppola Family is behind many great movies from the last 5 decades. 🎥

But did you know that they often work together or act in each other's film?

I made a colourful visualisation to help you see all the films on which they worked together.

Here's a great article about the movie "The Conversation" (1974), made in SF, starring Gene Hackman and directed by Coppola.

It's a movie that was based on the life of a well-known local private detective named Harry Lipset, who was sometimes mentioned in Herb Caen's column "back in the day."

This movie was overshadowed by "The Godfather" 1 & 2 released in 1972 & 1974 but is worth watching for local interest (a lot of scenes were shot on location in SF) and also because IMO it's a "good' movie that should be on any movie fan's "must see" list.

Yesterday, the big #movie news was that Francis #Coppola's film, MEGALOPOLIS, is going to premiere at the #Cannes Film Festival.

Today, the news is that Eleanor Coppola, #author, #filmmaker, #artist, wife of Francis (for 61 yrs!), mother of Sofia, and matriarch of the sprawling Coppola "franchise," has sadly died.

I love her books. She always seemed very level-headed is the swirling world of her husband. She lived a long and good life, but it's still very sad news.

The Hollywood Reporter · Eleanor Coppola, Emmy-Winning Director of ‘Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,’ Dies at 87By Mike Barnes

"If I could leave you with one thought after you see my new film, it would be this: Our founders borrowed a Constitution, Roman Law, and Senate for their revolutionary government without a king, so American History could neither have taken place nor succeed as it did without classical learning to guide it."

— Francis Coppola speaking before the special screening of his new film, MEGALOPOLIS.

I've seen most every Francis #Coppola #film, but I never saw his 1982 film, ONE FROM THE HEART. I always wanted to, but never did, and it was also considered a flop and all that. Still, even when not at his best Coppola is worth watching. But I always wondered if the flop angle was unfair. Perhaps it's actually great and just needs to be seen. Now it's been restored in 4K, re-edited, with more footage added, and it's coming back to theaters. Hmmmm 🤔

Might go see it.

IndieWire · Francis Ford Coppola's 'One From the Heart: Reprise' Gets 4K ReleaseBy Samantha Bergeson

Back in the 1980s I read Eleanor #Coppola's book, "Notes on the Making of Apocalypse Now," published in 1979, the same year the famous #film directed by her husband was released. It immediately became one of my favorite #books on #filmmaking. And in that book she described shooting a #documentary about the film as well. All that footage, though, was shelved until it was edited by others and released in 1991. And that film became one of my favorites on filmmaking.

Before Sofia Coppola made her feature film directing debut with THE VIRGIN SUICIDES (1999), she directed the short film LICK THE STAR (1998). It played many times on the Independent Film Channel, and one can see many of the themes and stylistic elements that have become well known from her subsequent films.
