#Palestine / From mass protests to moral silence: the evolution of Israeli public response to the massacre of Palestinian civilians

Ghazi Abu Jiab, who writes for Project Ofek - a joint initiative of the Van Leer Institute, the Forum for Regional Thinking, and the I'lam Center in Nazareth, began his story as a Palestinian refugee child in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp, and his personal experiences during the 1967 war shaped his early political consciousness. He has witnessed and analyzes the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from multiple periods, from his first encounter with Israeli soldiers in 1967 through to the current situation. He combines both personal lived experience as a Palestinian refugee with academic analysis.

[…] The horrific scenes from the attack aroused anger and existential anxiety in the Israeli public. The way these emotions were manipulated by the leadership and media contributed to the public's ability to ignore what has been happening in Gaza since. Despite the severe blow to the security forces, it's clear that #Hamas and Gaza do not pose an existential threat to Israel. Nevertheless, #Netanyahu worked to establish this narrative to mobilize public support for the war effort, even at the cost of sacrificing the hostages.

Abu Jiab argues that Israel's shift from its humanitarian consciousness is evidenced by the stark contrast between two historical moments: In 1982, 400,000 Israelis protested the Sabra and Shatila massacre, demonstrating collective moral outrage over civilian casualties, while today, there's relatively minimal public protest over extensive civilian casualties in #Gaza. This transformation is attributed to several factors: the rise of nationalist and messianic ideologies replacing earlier secular-liberal values, the psychological impact of ongoing conflict and security threats, the growing influence of settlement expansion, and what he describes as a process of dehumanization in public discourse. Abu Jiab suggests this shift isn't just about policy changes but represents a deeper transformation in societal values and collective moral consciousness.

Abu Jiab warns that just as October 7th traumatized Israeli society and led to an "unrestrained response" against Gaza's population, the destruction and death in Gaza will be "etched in Palestinian collective memory for generations." He states that Israeli democracy has become "a one-man show leading Israel and the region into an abyss" and sees no leader - in either coalition or opposition - capable of leading toward a better future.

Geopolitical Economy Report · West splits on Israel: US threatens ICC & allies over Netanyahu arrest warrant - Geopolitical Economy ReportThe West is divided on Israel, after International Criminal Court issued arrest warrant for PM Netanyahu over crimes in Gaza. US threatens ICC sanctions

The Bibi Files is a documentary on Netanyahu's corruption trials. Coming out soon.

Netanyahu, this poor excuse for a man, this cartoonish mafia type, who has killed millions through the wars he has instigated + the small matter of a genocide, should spend the rest of his wretched life in jail, together with that pig of a wife of his.. just look at this preview.

🚨* Trump ally warns UK, it will "crush" their economy if they attempt to arrest #Netanyahu, after the International Criminal Court issues a warrant for the #Israeli PM's arrest!

And so the reign of global #Fascist tyranny begins. #Trump is above #US law, & now #MAGA is above international law.

BTW, this is the same Lindsey Graham who welcomed the ICC arrest warrant when issued in 2023 for #Putin l, hut has s8nc3 backtracked!

#UK, we've been warned! 😳

The Independent · Donald Trump ally warns Keir Starmer the US will ‘crush’ the UK economy if it helps arrest Benjamin NetanyahuBy Kate Devlin

Wow. There are a lot of traditionally educated people who really seem to believe that someone who was “democratically elected” is somehow excused from accountability for committing war crimes, and even more obscenely, seem to believe, going by their public statements, that war crimes by such “leaders” are allowed when the criminal represents an “ally”.

This is nonsense and absolutely reprehensible.

As we commemorate Stalin's commitment of genocide against Ukraine, let's remember Gareth Jones, the Welch journalist who exposed it to the world while Stalin kept Russia ignorant of it and Walter Duranty, the Moscow bureau chief of the New York Times, who was complicit with Stalin and won the Pulitzer Prize for it.

So, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Finland, Portugal, Slovenia and Ireland said they would arrest Netanyahu.

Germany, France and the UK declined to give a straight answer. How about comply with international law? You signed the agreement. You abide by it. That simple.

Last but not least, far right Orban is willing to shelter his friend Netanyahu. How cosy. Nestling together in Hungary.

It seems to me that the #ICC warrant gives #Netanyahu tremendous power to damage the ICC itself, as well as #NATO and the #EU.

Let's say for argument's sake that Netanyahu decides to take a little trip to Amsterdam tomorrow (or even worse, the day after the #Trump inauguration). What would happen? After internal discord in the Dutch government, only two outcomes are possible: they arrest him, or they don't. Sadly, both options are disastrous in the current international context. 🧵 1/
