Interesting observation trawling online archives for references to the dead at battle of #Edgehill 1642.

Contemp. reports say therewere so many bodies they were buried in pits, but you'd think there would still be some recorded in nearby villages, died later of wounds, or taken home & buried.

But there's so little, as if 23rd Oct never happened. Stark compared to other battles w/ so many records.

Is it really just that nearly everyone was buried on site? 🤔

Why is anything even vaguely resembling an #EnglishCivilWar style royalist portrait dumped in the 'circle of William Dobson' category? It's so lazy. This one isn't in any universe either in the manner of, after, or indeed 'circle' of Dobson. It's a random man in a beard, collar and black doublet. Could be any manner, could well even be European.

Happy 409th birthday (or at least, baptism) to Edward Dobson, stationer, bookseller, pamphleteer, Royalist rebel and literary pain in the neck to the #EnglishCivilWar Parliament in London. Brother to painter William, who was over in Oxford doing portraits of Charles I, Ned fought the King's enemies in his own unrepentant - and dangerous - way: he slayed them in print. Edward disappeared from the records in 1644. I hope one day to find out what happened to him.

The execution of King Charles: ‘Let’s put all brutish tyrants down’. The king’s beheading in 1649 came at a time of social tumult. The power of the church and nobility was damaged and England became a republic for ten years. But radicals such as the Levellers, and communists such as Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, wanted to go much further peopleandnature.wordpress.com/ The picture is a detail from a contemporary engraving, showing the execution #coronation #englishcivilwar #diggers #winstanley

Sir Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Baron Fairfax of Cameron (1612-1671), was the first and highly successful commander of the Parliamentarian New Model Army during the English Civil Wars (1642-1651). Fairfax's leadership, tactical prowess, and courage were all evident in many battles, but his greatest triumph was utterly defeating the Royalists at the Battle of Naseby in June 1645.worldhistory.org/Sir_Thomas_Fa #EnglishCivilWar #SirThomasFairfax #History
